The story takes place in Tallaght (south area of Dublin), a saturday afternoon, in a shopping center. Like other saturdays, Deirdre,14, meets her friends like other teenagers in the world ...finally almost ! Indeed, Deirdre doesn't come alone at her weekly meeting, she comes with Sarah, 6 months... her daughter ! Still in childhood but she already has adult's responsabilities. However, in Ireland, it's common to meet some girls as Deirdre who come, like her, from a discriminated social environnement...In the last century, the "unmarried girls" were locked into convent schools, shielded from the glances (The Magdalene Sisters, movie of Peter Mullan), but now, most of the time, they live within their family and seem more free... seemingly ! Nevertheless, it's only illusion ! Indeed, how can you feel free in a country which doesn't respect the right of the women to have their own body ? But, the question is : "Who is guilty ?" The parents ? Who don't warn their children against the risks of no protected sexual relations. The school ? Which glances through school educational sexual program and where the lack of coeducation of pupils increases the tensions. The government ? Which refuses to legalize the abortion (6,000 women per year abort abroad and in UK it costs an everage of 600 euro), which proposes "the morning-after pill" only on prescription, which allows to meet a gynecologist only with a reference letter from GP...
If you have no money, you have no choice... And how about the prevention? Nothing ! Impossible to find distributors of condoms outside pharmacies for example, you can find it in the pubs (no access for underage people) or in the shops, but for 12 condoms you have to pay 14 euro (a luxury for teenagers !), in addition, no advertising campaign to warn people about aids or unwanted pregnancy : Don't say anything, don't tell anyone !
Nevertheless, the number of births of teenagers under 18 has increased... The true answer is the only true culprit is The Religion who helps to release the consciousnesses. Indeed, The religion steers the life of the Irish and steers even the country itself (the separation of the Church and The State is only too recent to be concrete : only 30 years). So, in a nation in full revival, Ireland has to accept its realities and has to change the mentalities... in order to stop the sacrifice of a generation.
